Brandy

Brandy has a long history, as early as the 13th century, a kind of brandy was being made from wine in both Spain and Italy. The French did not begin making this spirit until more than 100 years later.


In the 17th century, traders from northern Europe, particularly Netherlands, came to the port of La Rochelle to take delivery of the consignments of salt. They took some of the region's thin, acidic wine with them. To save space in the ship's hold, the wines were boiled to reduce their volume by evaporation and then, reconstituted with water. However, it came to be noticed that the Charnete wines actually benefited from this process. It was but a short step from there to actual distillation.

Early brandy making techniques utilised boiling vats of wine covered with absorbent materials like sheep's wool to perform the process of distillation. Because alcohol has a lower boiling point than water, the alcohol vapours would rise and be absorbed by the wool. The wool was subsequently removed from time to time to obtain the alcohol distillate.

At the beginning of the 18th century some people came to realize that plums too are suitable for making quality brandies. The overproduction of plums had motivated local farmers to establish in 1894 the distillery in Vizovice

Apple Brandy Highball

  • 2 oz Apple Brandy
  • Ginger Ale or Club Soda
  • Ice

Fill a highball glass 1/2 full with ice. Pour brandy over ice. Fill with ginger ale or club soda. Add a twist of lemon

Brandy Alexander

  • 1/2 oz Brown Creme de Cacao
  • 1/2 oz Brandy
  • 1/2 oz Heavy Cream
  • Ice (cracked)

Shake with ice and strain into cocktail glass.

Cherry Blossom

  • 1 1/2 oz Brandy
  • 1/2 oz Cherry-flavored Brandy
  • 1 1/2 tsp Triple Sec
  • 1 1/2 tsp Grenadine
  • 2 tsp Lemon Juice
  • Ice

Moistened the rim of a glass with cherry brandy and dip it into powdered sugar. Shake ingredients ice and strain into the glass. Add a maraschino cherry on top.

Yellow Parrot

  • 1 oz. Brandy
  • 1 oz. Pernod
  • 1 oz. Yellow Chartreuse

Mix all ingredients with ice in a shaker and pour into chilled cocktail glass.
